Celebrating 50 Years of ACS Membership: Dr. Nori Y. Chu

      Dr. Chu came to the United States of America to further his education after receiving a B. S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a Ph. D. degree in Physical Chemistry in 1968.

      He pursued his professional career at American Optical Corporation in Massachusetts. He held the position of Director of Chemical Technology when he retired. His specialty is in the field of photochromic materials and laser eye protections. Dr. Chu contributed significantly to the first commercialization of a plastic photochromic lens, Photolite. Photolite is a precursor to the Transition lenses. He was granted with 12 U. S. patents and had many scientific papers published.

      Dr. Chu served as a councilor for the ACS Central Massachusetts local section for several years. He and one other ACS member organized Chemical Week activities for many years and received an outstanding achievement award one year.      Dr. Chu is married to his wife, Lisa, for more than 50 years. They have one son and one daughter. They are blessed having 4 healthy and lovely grandsons. He enjoys outdoor activities, gardening and travel. He is also active in financial management
