Busy Busy Chemistry Club

These past couple months have kept the Sacramento City ACS Chemistry Club busy and on their toes. The clubs have been doing events back to back. In the month of March 2016, the Chemistry Club participated at Club day on SCC campus. The club performed an all crowd favorite demo, which is the liquid nitrogen demo. Many attendees present at the Club Day event thoroughly enjoyed the demo and have signed up for the Chemistry Club, proving that this Club Day event was another successful event for the Chem Club. For the rest of the month of March was spent planning for the events upcoming in the months of April and May.

In the month of April, the Chemistry Club has been participating in events every single week. On April 7-8, 2016, the Chemistry Club were able to submit their poster to the R. Bryan Miller Symposium and were able to participate in the poster session. President Micah Bongo and Vice President Nicole Ackerman were there to represent the club and had a great time and were able to reunite with former SCC ACS Chem Club members who had transferred from Sacramento City College to UCDavis. A week later from the Miller Symposium on April 16, 2016, the Chemistry Club were invited to participate at the first annual Girl Scout STEAM Expo at the Sacramento Regional Center for Girl Scouts. The attendants at the STEAM Expo were Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts, where the age range was 5-12 years old. The club performed two demos, Magic Sand and Elephant Toothpaste. The Girl Scouts loved the Elephant Toothpaste demo because the Chem Club designed the demo to be interactive, in which the attendees were able to choose the color the demo would be as the reaction is going, making it more enjoyable for both the attendees and the volunteers present.

The future plans for the Chemistry Club for the rest of the semester are the Marguerite Elementary Science Fair on May 6, the transition from this semester to the next semester due to a majority of the current officers are transferring to universities, outreach program and the Sacramento City Centennial Event occurring in the Fall 2016 semester.
