On September 7th at the ARC Ballroom on the UC Davis campus, the Sacramento Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) honored several local chemists including its 50, 60, and 70-year members. Mr. Howard Adler was honored for reaching 70 years of ACS membership.
Jan Hayes presented Bob Fendall of Sheldon High his High School Teacher Award (HSTA). In accepting it, Bob mentioned the significance of the mentoring he has done and the mentoring he has received as an important part of his teach experience. He cited an email he had recently received from a student who was in his class about 20 years ago. The student mentioned how important Bob had been in helping him to get his life on track.

Christopher Sousa received the first High School Student Scholarship awarded by the section. Coincidentally, he had been mentored by Bob Fendall at Sheldon High.
Anna Lo and Mira Milic, both currently at UC Davis, won the Student Travel Awards. They each had recently presented their work at the Fall 2019 ACS National Meeting in San Diego.
Stephanie Doan and Hoby Wedler each gave fascinating talks about detecting adulteration in almond and olive oils, respectively. They followed this up with a tasting of each kind of oil.
